HILY DOES NOT CONDUCT CRIMINAL BACKGROUND SCREENINGS OF ITS USERS.

ONLINE DATING SAFETY AWARENESS

Your safety is paramount. Getting to know someone through an online dating service may be risky, and you should follow safety precautions when sharing information or meeting in person.

Please follow these guidelines to protect yourself while engaging with others online.

Protecting Yourself from Personal Information Theft

  • Avoid disclosing personal details such as your last name, email address, home address, phone number, place of work, social security number, details of your daily routine, or any other identifying information in your profile or other means of communication;
  • Be aware of users who can commit identity theft/falsify a dating profile. If something feels off, trust your instincts and proceed with caution.

Protecting Yourself from Sexual Assault and Dating Violence

  • Always be vigilant when communicating with strangers online. False identities are not uncommon in online dating profiles;
  • Remember, any sexual conduct without explicit consent is a criminal act and subject to prosecution;
  • Inform a family member or friend of your meeting time and location if you choose to have an in-person (offline) meeting with another user;
  • Do not agree to be picked up at your home. Always arrange your own transportation to and from the meeting spot;
  • Choose a public place that is well-populated for any meetings. If at any point you feel uncomfortable, do not hesitate to leave;
  • Help to prevent a perpetrator of a rape, assault, or financial fraud from hurting or continuing to hurt others by reporting such criminal activity of another user to both Hily and local law enforcement. Prompt reporting can aid Hily in taking necessary actions against the offender.

Protecting Yourself from Financial Crimes

  • Stop all communication with anyone who pressures you for financial information or attempts in any way to coerce you into revealing such information.
  • Never send money, especially by wire transfer, to a user you meet through Hily – even if the user claims to be experiencing an emergency.
  • If you are the victim of a financial crime, report the incident immediately to both Hily and relevant law enforcement authorities.

Protecting Yourself from Romance Scams

Romance scams involve deceivers creating the illusion of a romantic or close relationship to manipulate and/or steal from the victim. Typically, these scammers are charming but consistently find excuses to avoid meeting in person. They often request money for various pretenses such as medical emergencies, travel expenses, or investment opportunities like cryptocurrency.
