Since entering the limelight with her breakout single Ocean Eyes in 2015, Billie Eilish has tried to keep her boyfriends as private as possible.

“I definitely want to keep [relationships] private. I’ve had relationships and kept them private, and even the ones that I’ve had, with the tiny amount that I’ve let the world see, I regret,” she told the British radio show Capital Breakfast in 2020.

She reaffirmed her stance on privacy in a Vogue interview in October 2024. “I wish no one knew anything about my sexuality or anything about my dating life. Ever, ever, ever,” she said, before adding, “And I hope that they never will again.”

While she’s fiercely protective of her personal life, her relationships have captured the spotlight a few times. So, if you’ve ever wondered about Billie Eilish’s dating history, here’s a timeline of her past relationships.

Billie Eilish and her boyfriends

Brandon Quentin Adams (2018–2019)

Eilish’s first public relationship was with rapper Brandon Quentin Adams. The pair started dating in 2018 during Billie’s early years in the spotlight. Little is known about how Eilish met the rapper from Los Angeles, California. To this day, Adams is inactive on social media.

Most of what we know about the couple’s relationship comes from the documentary Billie Eilish: The World’s a Little Blurry. The pair used the “L” word in the film, but their relationship was portrayed as toxic.

In one scene, Billie Eilish revealed that Adams had broken his hand by punching a wall. Later in the film, she disclosed that Adams didn’t get her anything for Valentine’s Day.

Why Did Billie Eilish Break Up With Brandon Quentin Adams?

“I don’t think you should be in a relationship super excited about things that the other person couldn’t care less about. There was just a lack of effort.”

Before the end credits of her documentary, Billie Eilish explained that she and Adams didn’t want the same things in life, so they broke up less than a year in. Adams responded to fan backlash in a series of Instagram story posts. “There’s always two sides to a situation… I refuse to be bashed,” the rapper wrote.

Eilish’s less-than-a-year-long relationship with Brandon Quention Adams shows the importance of healthy self-esteem in a relationship. Eilish stated that Adams couldn’t truly love her because he didn’t love himself, which is a common reason that relationships end.

Matthew Tyler Vorce (2021–2022)

Two years after her split from Adams, the “Bad Guy” singer was spotted with actor Matthew Tyler Vorce, creating rumors that the two might be dating. The actor, who was 29 at the time, was seen cuddling Eilish as the pair ordered coffee in Los Angeles, California in April 2021.

Despite being in the middle of her Happier Than Ever album release, Eilish was able to keep the relationship private. While the album hit number one on the US Billboard 200, Matthew Tyler Vorce went private on Instagram. The singer’s publicists also declined to comment on the dating rumors.

After being seen out in Santa Barbara, they finally confirmed their relationship. Weeks later, they surprised fans by ending it.

Eilish’s breakup with actor Matthew Tyler Vorce reflects a growing desire for people to keep their love life off social media. Being selective about what you share may be better for your relationship, helping maintain trust and intimacy.

“The fact that thousands of people take time out of their day to write the most heinous things on someone they will never know[‘]s posts is the most cowardly thing you can possibly do. Live your own life…Nobody cheated on anyone. Relationships end… Creating rumors and LYING on the internet is dangerous.

In November 2022, the singer reflected on her relationship with Vorce. Eilish told Vanity Fair that she was grateful for their relationship and that the two remained good friends.

Jesse Rutherford (2022–2023)

Billie Eilish kept her first two boyfriends relatively private. With the Neighbourhood singer Jesse Rutherford, it was a different story.

Dating rumors began when the pair were first spotted together at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights in Los Angeles in October 2022. Just a few days prior, fans saw Eilish and Jesse Rutherford attend a dinner date and kiss outside Lal Mirch Indian restaurant in Studio City.

“It definitely seemed like a date… Billie touched the back of Jesse’s head for a long time, he kissed her on the cheek, and they both kissed on the lips.”

Next, fans saw Eilish and Jesse Rutherford attend a Halloween party together. Their Halloween costumes appeared to poke fun at their 11-year age gap, with Billie Eilish dressed as a baby and Jesse Rutherford as an elderly man. Eilish went Instagram official with their relationship by posting a now-deleted photo of them in costume.

Billie Eilish and Jesse Rutherford made their red carpet debut a few days later at the 11th annual LACMA Art + Film Gala in Los Angeles on November 6, wrapped in a Gucci blanket and wearing full matching Gucci sleepwear. Following their Lacma + Art Film Gala appearance, Eilish spoke to Vanity Fair and infamously called Jesse Rutherford “the hottest fucking fucker alive.”

They were seen again in March 2023 when the Vanity Fair Oscar party hosted Eilish and Jesse Rutherford in Beverly Hills, California.
